Due to the fact that Intel have a much better range of processors at this present time, this post will focus purely on Intel CPU’s. Not to worry if you an AMD fan I will post plenty of articles with AMD recommendations.

Trying to understand the ins and outs of a motherboard can seem a little technical. Especially for those who just want  a no nonsense recommendation for the best motherboard for gaming.

Not to worry that is what I will give you at the bottom of the page. For those who actually want a bit more technical advice and know how I advise you to read on.

Some essential things to know.

If you know anything about computer components then you will know that the processor or CPU is housed in the motherboard. However there is a lot more to understand:

Intel and AMD are two of the companies that make chip sets for motherboards. This is the north bridge, and south bridge. Although it is not vital to have  a complete understand of this terminology. It is however important to know that because of this Intel and AMD control what type of socket the processor is housed in.

Again I won’t go into a massive amount of detail as this is a post about the best motherboard for gaming and not a technical breakdown of the motherboard itself. Click here for that.

Choose your socket wisely.

If you have already bought your processor. or have a processor in mind then you need to make sure you buy a motherboard that corresponds with its socket type. For instance if you buy a second generation LGA1155, i5 or i7 Intel processor, then make sure you buy a motherboard with a socket 1155.

It’s easy once you grasp this and you realize  its all about compatibility. It could easily be said that your choice of motherboard is really governed by your choice of processor.

Best motherboard for gaming: socket 1155 or socket 2011?

This is a very hot topic of gamers right now. What we would say is that unless you have unlimited resources then go for a motherboard with an 1155 socket.

The 2011 socket motherboards are for the new 6 core Intel processors,  and support up to 64GB of RAM. This is a monumental amount and unless you just like having the most powerful computer or have limitless money then you can you still get the power you need form the 1155 motherboards.

I am not discouraging anyone from buying a socket 2011 motherboard. They are fantastic things,  especially for super demanding tasks. This is why I will still list you my preferred 2011 motherboards.

For those who want to save a bit of money and still have an amazing setup then the socket 1155 motherboard is the way forward. You have remember they still support a whopping 32GB of RAM. They also support the top end i7 and i5 dual and quad core processors.
